Before you trust this list, know my bias
I'm a materials buyer who has been handling custom rubber orders for eight years. I've personally made—and documented—17 significant mistakes that added up to roughly $6,300 in wasted budget. Now I maintain our team's checklist so the next person doesn't pay for my errors.
When I first started building prototypes on 5x7 foam board, I assumed hot glue was the universal answer. It isn't. In September 2022, I approved a 45-board run with Momentive silicone rubber feet attached by hot glue. By lunchtime, half the feet were hanging loose. $840 of material wasted, a week of delay, and a very awkward phone call.
So if you're here because you typed can you hot glue foam board into Google: yes, usually. But the answer changes when silicone rubber is in the joint. This is the checklist I use now.
Who should use this checklist
Short-run displays, trade show mockups, and prototypes. That's it. If you're building something load-bearing, find a display fabrication shop. I'm happy to advise on the rubber side, but I'm not going to pretend I'm a foam board engineer. I'd rather work with a specialist who knows their limits than a generalist who overpromises.
Use this when:
- You need to attach a silicone rubber strip or foot to a 5x7 foam board.
- You're prototyping and need a repeatable assembly method.
- You want to avoid melting the board during the glue-up.
If you only need to glue foam board to foam board, the process is simpler: scuff, use low-temp glue, don't pile it on. The complexity starts when silicone rubber is involved.
The 6-step checklist
Step 1: Know the rubber you're holding
Momentive silicone rubber is a workhorse for high-heat gaskets and weather-resistant seals. It's also one of the least hot-glue-friendly surfaces you'll meet. Silicone has low surface energy, so adhesives basically bead up or peel away. That's not a defect; it's the chemistry of the material.
If your part looks like a Steele Rubber Products weatherstrip, you might be holding EPDM instead. EPDM bonds a little easier than silicone, and it has its place. But it doesn't handle high heat the way silicone can. To be fair, both materials are useful—you just need to know which one is in your hand before you pick the adhesive.
One sourcing note: search terms matter. If you type momentive silicone rubber, you get high-temp elastomer products. If you type steele rubber, you usually get weatherstrip and automotive trim. Those are different product families, and the bonding process is different too.
Step 2: Scuff the foam board face
Most 5x7 foam board has a slick paper coating. Hot glue on that surface will stick just long enough to give you false confidence. Lightly sand the area with 120-grit sandpaper until it looks dull. Wipe the dust off with a tack cloth.
If the board is printed, sanding will wreck the image. In that case, attach the rubber to the edge or use a mechanical fastener. That's not a failure—it's knowing the material limit.
Step 3: Use low-temp glue, not high-temp
This is the step almost everyone skips. High-temp hot glue melts the foam core behind the paper face. The board may look fine for a minute, then the glue line sinks in and the joint gets weak.
Use a low-temp gun and low-temp sticks, typically around 250°F. It feels hot enough to work, but it won't destroy the core. I learned this in 2017, when I pushed a high-temp glue line through a board like a hot knife. That mistake led to a policy change for our whole team.
Step 4: Do a 10-minute peel test on scrap
Testing sounds boring. I added it to our checklist after Q1 2024, when a $3,200 order came within one bad batch of failing. We caught 47 weak bonds because the peel test took ten minutes at the start of the run. That's not a victory story; it's a close call.
Apply a strip of glue to the same kind of board you're using. Let it cool completely. Then pull. If it lifts with a gentle tug, go back to Step 2 and sand more. If it won't stay after sanding, the glue is wrong for that board. Do not start the real boards until the test piece is annoying to peel off.
Step 5: For Momentive silicone rubber, don't rely on hot glue
Here's the part that cost me the most. Hot glue will hold silicone to a 5x7 foam board for a quick prototype—maybe a few hours. For anything permanent, it fails. The glue releases from the silicone surface as it cools and shifts.
What works is a silicone-compatible primer plus a two-part silicone adhesive or a rubber adhesive that's made for silicone. Roughen the rubber surface first, clean it with isopropyl alcohol, apply the primer, and cure as directed.
Everything I'd read said silicone is nearly impossible to bond. My experience now says otherwise: it bonds very well when the prep is right. The problem is skipping prep. Honestly, I'm not sure why one silicone compound accepts primer better than another. My best guess is release agent left from the molding process. Whatever the cause, primer isn't optional.
Step 6: Check resolution and shipping thickness before you commit
If you're printing a face for a 5x7 foam board, keep the image at 300 DPI at final size. That works out to at least 1500 × 2100 pixels. The industry standard for commercial print is 300 DPI, and I've watched 72-DPI images turn into blurry messes once stretched across foam board.
Shipping is the second quiet killer. A 5x7 foam board is smaller than the USPS large envelope minimum, which starts at 6.125 inches high by 11.5 inches long. According to USPS Business Mail 101, flats need to meet those minimums and stay within thickness limits. Even if it were the right size, the thickness limit for a flat is 0.75 inches. A rigid foam board with silicone rubber feet may not qualify as a letter or flat at all, so don't budget postage until you ask your carrier.
According to USPS Business Mail 101, the minimum size for a large envelope (flat) is 6.125 inches high by 11.5 inches long. A 5x7 foam board is smaller than that, so it should be treated as an irregular or parcel-like item unless your local post office says otherwise.
What about marketing claims?
One more thing. If you're making a product with Momentive silicone rubber and you want to call it food-safe or non-toxic, you need evidence. Per FTC advertising guidelines (ftc.gov), claims must be truthful and substantiated. The material grade may support that, but your final assembly, glue, and foam board can affect it. Don't put a claim on the package unless you have test documentation.
I've seen a production run get held because a brochure said food-grade without a report backing it up. It was an expensive way to learn about the FTC rule.

Can you hot glue Momentive silicone rubber to a 5x7 foam board? Only as a temporary tack. For anything that needs to survive shipping or use, use a silicone-compatible primer and adhesive. That's the expensive lesson from my $840 mistake, and it's why this checklist exists.
