- Compression set. If your strip needs to keep sealing after repeated compression cycles, silicone holds up better. I've seen EPDM strip fail compression testing at 30% deflection after 70 hours at 212°F. Silicone typically passes.
Now — does that mean you should always buy silicone strip? No. If your application is indoor, moderate temperature, and low-cycle, solid rubber strip is perfectly fine and costs way less. The mistake is assuming "silicone" is automatically better for everything.
Q4: PVC vs Foam Board — Which One for Industrial Applications?
The PVC vs foam board question pops up mostly when people are choosing signage, backing panels, or protective barriers. Here's the thing — they're different products for different jobs.
- PVC board is dense, rigid, moisture-resistant, and takes mechanical fasteners well. It's heavier and more expensive.
- Foam board is lightweight, cheaper, easy to cut, but dents easily and doesn't handle moisture well without a coating.
I don't think there's a universal answer here. It depends on load, exposure, and lifespan. What I can tell you is that in my experience, people who choose foam board purely on price almost always end up replacing it within 12 months. The $40 saved per panel becomes $120 in labor to redo the installation.
Q5: Why Are Industrial Buyers Asking About Silicone Freezer Molds?
This one surprised me too. But silicone freezer molds have become a reference point for a broader question: "Is food-grade silicone actually different from industrial silicone?"
Yes. Food-grade silicone is formulated without certain plasticizers and fillers that industrial grades may contain. If you're doing anything that touches food, medical, or skin-contact applications, you need the food-grade or medical-grade version. Don't assume "silicone" means "safe for everything."
And on the freezer mold side — the reason they work well is silicone's flexibility across a wide temperature range. Same reason it works in cryogenic seals. Same material property, different application.
Q6: What Does a Rush Order Actually Cost?
This is where the total cost of ownership conversation gets real.
I used to think rush fees were just vendors padding their margins. Then I saw what actually happens operationally. Someone has to pull your order out of sequence, reconfigure a line, pay overtime, and eat the scheduling risk.
Here's a real example from last quarter:
- Standard quote: $1,200, 10-day lead time
- Rush quote: $1,680, 48-hour lead time
The client almost went with a third vendor who quoted $950 but couldn't guarantee a delivery date. They chose the rush option. The $480 premium saved them from a $15,000 contractual penalty for missing their installation deadline.
But here's what most people miss: the rush fee wasn't the real cost driver. The real cost drivers were:

Q7: What Should I Check Before Approving Any Silicone Purchase Order?
Three things, every time:
- Current TDS from Momentive's official site. Not the distributor's copy. The manufacturer's current version.
- Lead time confidence, not just lead time quoted. Ask what happens if they miss the date. If there's no answer, that tells you something.
- Total cost math. Base price + shipping + any setup + potential rework + the cost of your time chasing the order. I've seen a "cheaper" order become 30% more expensive once you count the hours spent fixing problems.
That's it. No magic. Just the stuff that actually matters when the deadline is real and the budget is finite.
