The Call That Started It All

In this case, our vendor had probably mixed the batch incorrectly—too much plasticizer, not enough crosslinker. For a 60 durometer silicone rubber ring, the industry tolerance is usually plus or minus 5 points. 45 Shore A was a full 15 points off. Normal tolerance is +/-3 to 5 durometer points for molded silicone parts. We were miles outside that.
The Cost of Skipping a 5-Minute Check
The vendor claimed it was "within industry standard" when we flagged it. I've heard that line before. It's usually a sign that the vendor is scrambling. We rejected the batch anyway. They redid it at their cost—about $7,000 for the raw material and molding time.
But here's the hidden cost: our line was down for three days. We had to re-verify the replacement batch, re-train the assemblers on the (correct) part, and pay for expedited testing. - Visual inspection: We look for flash, sink marks, or discoloration—often signs of an unstable cure cycle.
We also updated our supplier contract to include a clause that the vendor bears the cost of any production downtime caused by out-of-spec material. I only fully believed this after ignoring it and eating that $22,000 mistake. Now, our incoming inspection checklist is non-negotiable. It's basically the cheapest insurance we have.
