Last March, our maintenance manager sent me a two-line request: “Evaluate Momentive silicone for the rubber rollers on Laminator 4. Current cover only lasts about 14 months.” That email started a research project that taught me how the Momentive website actually works. This is the checklist I now use whenever a materials supplier name shows up without context.

If you are new to industrial silicones, start by answering one question: what is liquid silicone rubber, and where does it fit? Because silicone is not one material. It is a family of materials. The Momentive website becomes useful to a buyer only after you know which family member you need. Step 1: Confirm you are on the real Momentive official homepage

A Google search for “Momentive” returns two different companies. The Momentive official homepage for materials is momentive.com. That is the silicone and specialty materials business with roots in GE Silicones technology. The other Momentive, momentive.ai, is a survey software company. If you type “momentive” and click the first result, you can waste an entire afternoon on the wrong site.

I check for two things before digging deeper:

Once you are on the right page, lower your expectation of finding a price list. Momentive is not a distributor. The official homepage gives you product families, technical data sheets, and application guidance. Pricing usually comes later, through an authorized channel partner. That is normal for this industry, but it matters for how you plan your sourcing timeline.

Step 2: Learn what is liquid silicone rubber before you search

If you search the Momentive website for “what is liquid silicone rubber,” you will end up in a rabbit hole of acronyms. Let me save you the detour.

Liquid silicone rubber (LSR) is a two-component silicone that stays flowable until it is cured. It is processed with injection molding equipment and is a good fit for seals, gaskets, diaphragms, and small parts with complex geometry. Tooling costs and setup matter. LSR is not always the cheapest option on a per-part basis, but it can be the lowest total cost when you need repeatable, high-volume parts.

For rubber rollers, LSR is often not the first place I look. Rollers usually start as a solid silicone rubber compound, often a high-consistency rubber (HCR), that a roller shop extrudes or molds around a metal core. Understanding that difference kept me from asking for the wrong product family and getting a quote that looked absurd.

So before you open the Momentive website, write down which form you actually need: liquid silicone, solid high-consistency rubber, room-temperature-cure rubber, or silicone foam. The website search works much better when you search by chemistry instead of by application.

Step 3: Search by material type, not by the part name

The first time I used the Momentive website, I typed “rubber rollers” into the search box. The results were close to useless. That is my fault, not the website’s. Momentive organizes products by how they are made and what they are formulated for, not by the final machine part.

If you need material to re-cover a roller, search for high-consistency silicone rubber or silicone elastomers. If you need a molded liquid silicone part, search for liquid silicone rubber or LSR. If you need cushioning or gasketing, search for silicone foam or silicone sponge. This small change in vocabulary completely changed my research results.

Keep a second tab open for the part supplier. Momentive usually sells the raw material. The roller manufacturer, die-cutter, or molder buys that raw material and fabricates the final component. You need both conversations. I learned to ask my fabricator which Momentive grade they already run, then verify that grade against the data sheet on momentive.com. That saved us weeks of qualification testing.

Step 4: Compare like for like when silicone foam competes with 3M PE foam

Here is where I made my biggest mistake. We were sourcing a foam gasket for an electrical enclosure. The incumbent material was 3M PE foam. A fabricator suggested silicone foam as a higher-temperature alternative. I skimmed both data sheets, noticed similar thickness and density, and assumed they were close substitutes. They are not.

PE foam is a good, low-cost cushioning material, and 3M PE foam has earned its place in many industrial applications. But silicone foam and PE foam behave differently under long-term compression and heat. For a gasket that has to hold a seal for years, the upfront price of silicone foam can be higher while the total cost is lower. If the application stays cool and the gasket is purely protective, PE foam may be perfectly adequate. The point is not that one is superior. The point is that density and thickness do not tell you everything.

Now I compare four numbers before I even talk price:

If a supplier cannot show me test data for those four items, the quote is incomplete. Period.

Step 5: Collect data sheets into one comparison table

The Momentive website publishes technical data sheets for most product families. I download each one and build a simple spreadsheet with the following columns:

Why does this matter? Because sales conversations go much better when you can say, “I need a material with a compression set under 20 percent at this temperature,” instead of, “I need something heat resistant.” Heat resistant means different things to different people. A data sheet is a neutral reference point.

One thing I still do every time: I save the PDFs with the date in the filename. Data sheets get updated. If a vendor changes a formulation, the old data sheet disappears, and you will want proof of what was quoted to you.

Step 6: Ask about what is not included before you compare prices

The Momentive website will not show you a live price for most industrial materials. When you request a quote, you will likely receive pricing from a distributor or an authorized fabricator. This is where I have been burned before, and I am careful now.

I always ask for the following in writing:

A few years ago, I compared two quotes for a foam gasket project. Vendor A quoted a higher unit price. Vendor B quoted about 15 percent less. I almost went with Vendor B until I asked about tooling and setup fees. Vendor B charged separately for the die, for scrap, and for rush delivery. Vendor A’s higher price included all of it. The “cheap” quote was actually 9 percent more expensive once I added every line item. That experience changed how I run every competitive bid.

Step 7: Verify claims against an official source

Per FTC guidance (ftc.gov/business-guidance/advertising-marketing), product claims need to be truthful and backed by evidence. I apply that same standard to every supplier presentation I sit through. If a sales rep says a material is “good for continuous high heat” but the published data sheet lists a lower temperature range, I ask for the test report. If a fabricator says a silicone foam is flame retardant, I ask for the specific test standard and the result.

The Momentive website is a useful starting point, but it is not the finish line. Download the technical data sheet, ask for the corresponding safety data sheet, and get the test report before you commit to a qualification run. Marketing language is not engineering data. That rule has saved me more money than any discount I have ever negotiated.

Three mistakes I still watch for

First, do not judge the entire silicone category by one failed sample. If a roller cover fails early, the problem may be the formulation, the curing process, or the roller design. I have seen a material fail on one machine and work perfectly on an identical machine because the setup differed.

Second, do not skip the fabricator conversation. The Momentive official homepage can tell you what the raw material is capable of, but your local roller shop or molder determines how well it is processed. Ask them what they run regularly, not what they could theoretically run.

Third, do not ignore the total cost of testing. A cheaper material that requires three extra weeks of validation is not cheaper. When I calculate total cost, I include the cost of downtime, the cost of testing, and the cost of an early failure. That is the number that matters, not the price per pound.

Researching a new material supplier is not exciting work. It is methodical. But if you follow these seven steps, you will show up to the quote conversation with better questions, better data, and a much smaller chance of being surprised by the fine print. That is the whole goal.
